Declined because of her GENDER.

This is a true story.

I have a woman friend who has owned her own business for 45 years. When she and her husband started up, they needed money to get going and so they looked to their bank and then to members of their community to give them some financing. Each time they were declined because of gender and race – as you might imagine this scenario was not uncommon in the 1950’s. A woman owned business was unheard of and finding capital was almost impossible.

Why Your Marketing Doesn’t Work; The Problem of Penguins

Reason #1 why your marketing doesn’t work – You are using Big Business marketing rules. If you’re playing by their rules, you’re going to lose just about every time. Make up your own rules and you’ve got a better chance of your marketing working.

It’s a problem of penguins.

The Participation Age - don't miss it

We are no longer in the technology age, but the Participation Age. This means that no longer are products and services defined by one for use by many, but are created in community for the community. Entrepreneurs and Heros

Everyone loves a hero— the person who fights for what is right, who sees a problem and does whatever it takes to fix it or at least make a difference.

Small business owners are the heroes of today. They are the ones who try something new and end up benefiting other people.

You know those small business owners. Out there day after day, hitting it hard. The people who are charging down a new path, staying alert and taking risks, and seizing the opportunity when it’s ripe.

Define your worst to embrace the best

This week I had a conversation with a business owner whose business is expanding. He's adding some additional floor space to his business (despite the "economy" many people that I see are still thriving) and was looking at square foot price and potential profit per square foot.

He said to me "I've been thinking about the worst case scenario - I know you don't really like to think about that kind of thing" .

I assured him that was not the case at all. Worst case can be quickly changed around, once you acknowledge it.
